소리 환경을 구성하는 그 종류의 차이가 꽤 엇갈린 도심의 이곳과 저곳으로 왕래하는 나날과 그 사이에, 지역의 변화에 얽힌 소리에 다시 귀를 기울이게 된 나날들이 있다. 눈에 보이는 것과 달리 소리의 변화만이 다가오는 때들도 종종 있었다. 그사이의 변화를 감지하게 된다는 건, 유예된 것과 만기된 것을 보는 일과도 같다.

을지로에서만 십여 년을 작업실로 써온 가까운 동료 작가가 소음의 문제를 비롯해 돌연 이 지역에서의 작업실 생활을 종료하게 되면서, 그간 방문자였던 나는 그 소음 환경의 변화와 부재 사이 끝에, 짧은 시일로나마 하루하루 개입하는 방식을 궁리해 본다.

가까이 다가가면 고양이는 골골 소리-Purring-를 내고, 저 너머 큰 흰 면적을 지나간 작은 점은 멀어질수록 점점 더 큰 흰 눈 뭉치-Snowball-가 되어간다. 각진 건물 사이로 난 길의 모퉁이-Corner-를 돌면.

Days have spent traversing back and forth between disparate urban sites whose soundscapes contrast sharply, interspersed with days spent listening intently once more to the sounds tied to the region’s transformations. At times, unlike what meets the eye, it was only the shifts in sound that reached me. Sensing the changes in between feels much like witnessing what has been deferred and what has reached its expiration.

As a close fellow artist—who kept a studio in Euljiro for over a decade—suddenly closed their practice in this area due to noise issues among other reasons, I, who had long been a visitor, attempt to devise ways to intervene day by day, if only briefly, in the space between the changing soundscape and its ultimate absence.

Drawing close, a cat begins to purr (Purring); beyond, a small dot passing across a vast white surface becomes a growing snowball (Snowball) as it recedes into the distance. Turning the corner (Corner) of the street set between angled buildings.
